New name, new deadline, new reminder to write things down

My actual brain, not actual size

Human memory is utterly unreliable. Here are two important things I forgot and of which I was recently reminded:

[1] PAX10 submissions close in a little over a week. Had I remembered this I would have focussed on getting the next CF episode to alpha rather than tooling around with PlayPen and Fishie Fishie Fifty. I think I can put together enough of the game by then to represent the final features, but most of the content won’t be there. It’s going to be a hell of a week.

[2] I had a conversation with someone wherein they suggested probably the best possible name for a Captain Forever episode. What’s more, this title is perfect for what I’m currently developing. The title: Captain Jameson. Older gamers might know what this means, other folk might like to do a little research. Sure this breaks the rhymes-with-forever rule, but having invented that rule I’m pretty happy to ignore it. I’m especially happy to ignore it for a name like this. I hereby rename the forthcoming episode Captain Jameson.

all i can think of with that name is booze. in which case you may want to make sure they wont snag you for trademark something or other. kinda like monster cables suing everyone with monster in their name.

  2. Farbs says:

Huh. I can honestly say I had never heard of them.

  3. Joshua says:

Dear god, I get to be the first to break this one! :D You all need to check out Elite, one of the great classics that define space trading / combat.

I approve of this Farbs :)

Ah, I don’t like it. I think captain believer sounds way better. And when I do research Jameson, I get whisky, zombies and some sort of flotation device. Always a good combination. Ah, good times.

  5. Alehkhs says:

First space stations, now it’s got a name drawn from Elite.

    This is making me happy

  6. Rantenki says:

    Oldschool Amiga/C64 game references FTW!

  7. Joshua says:

@Vaconcovat: ‘Captain Jameson’ was the default name of your character in the series ‘Elite’ in the later game Frontier: Elite II, its revealed that the backstory is you are one of Commander Jamesons grandchildren.

@Rantenki: Is it bad I recall ArcElite for the Acorn Archimedes as one of the better Elite games, followed by Frontier: Elite II on the Amiga? (I have also for old times sake played the original on an emulated BBC Micro)

  8. Vaconcovat says:

@Joshua: Ah, thanks. I did eventually discover that.

Anyway, MOAR UPDATES FARBS. It’s the 5th/6th (time zones) And we haven’t had an update since this one.
    And nice brain BTW.

  9. Farbs says:

Yep yep, more updates are coming. I post every workday morning so there should be something new in the next 18 hours.

  10. Vaconcovat says:

Oh, so you didn’t post on the weekend. Duh :P

  11. Captain Darkshadow says:

hey Farbs, with your previous captain games while you’re not boosting you slowly decelerate which I’m sure for a game makes things a bit easier, but have you ever experimented without this? Just like in real space. It might make movement a bit more tricky but more skilful and maybe more fun?

    Was just wondering.

    Thanks.

  12. Farbs says:

Yep, I tried that initially to make the game feel more like real space flight. Unfortunately it was _awful_! It seems we’re just no good at dealing with the application of forces in a frictionless environment. Adding friction gave the game top speeds and more forgiving controls.

  13. Captain Darkshadow says:

Okay, thought you probably did I must say I am very impressed with the level of physics you’ve used in the game. I love the nav bar at the top with x,y,dx,dy,a and da very cool.

  14. Very creative,I like it.
