Captain Impostor is GO

Hunting Blix

Captain Impostor (Click for larger)

What’s like Captain Successor but faster, shootier, and in every way pew-pewier? It’s Captain Impostor!

This new episode in the Captain Forever series wraps up the Captain Successor story arc and experiments with an alternate construction mechanic. Forget the drudgery of module-by-module construction – now with a tap of the SHIFT key you can steal a nearby vessel’s entire configuration! Has your ship become damaged or uninteresting? Tap SHIFT again to discard it, then find something better to copy.

DISCLAIMER: The level of cloned modules is determined by Clone Power (CPW). Clone power is reclaimed from nearby command module destruction accidents and consumed through activation of the clone drive. It is recommended that the clone drive be used sparingly to maximize CPW.

So that’s it for Captain Forever, right? Of course not! I’m already planning the next episode. I expect to bring back construction and to add some larger game systems that span multiple playthroughs.

Supporters can play Captain Impostor RIGHT NOW, and non-supporters can consider it another reason to register.

Just completed Captain Imposter. I enjoyed it. I’m more of a shoot em up type guy. I like the lightening effect when you kill someone, most satisfying.

Tip: when you find a ship that is good don’t clone too early just because you can go up a grade. Use the same ship to kill as many as you can until the ship isn’t useable any more, you might have to avoid the big’uns that you won’t be able to kill. This seems to give you a bit of a backup of clone power in case things go wrong.

More tips available for $5 each ;) (though I’m yet to think them up).

After my first few attempts, the child like joy faded fast. The ships you have to pick from as cloning targets are just awful. In previous installments, I used a ships poor design to my advantage; if he was heavily armed I could maneuver behind him, blast his engine, then pop the command module. I once accidentally cloned a ship that was all thrusters, no fire power. The selection to chose from is like stomping on glass or lighting a finger on fire; you might prefer one over the other, but either way they are not good choices. Once you fly and find one that looks fantastic and clone it, you are happy until a laser blasts off one girder on the left side and now you are flying in circles since you are not even allowed to pull parts off to re-balance your self.

But amid all my negativity, this game is perfect for people who preferred the pew-pewiness of games. CI may look amazing, Ill stick with CS for a bit longer :)

I didn’t really know how I felt about it on the first play, but the more hours I put in, the more I grow to love how the game forces you out of your comfort zone and constantly demands changes of strategy.

I guess I’m a bit late to the comment party, but I’ve got to say I’m not at all disappointed with Captain Impostor. I think it shares more in common with Successor than some might initially think… you’ve still got to make decisions on ship configurations (what should I clone vs what should I keep), when to run, when to fight. Still got to deal with flying asymmetrical ships. In fact, I think I’ve actually got a bit better at flying ships due to Impostor. With Successor it’s possible to mold a ship into your style of play, whereas I feel Impostor forces you to mold your style of play to the ship. For me it was easy to get into a game playing rut with Succesor… I tended to be conservative and make my ships the same way each time. Imposter has forced me to consider what other designs can do. Okay, back to playing.

Just a quick question: what is “pew-pewier”?

NOTE: Scan the ship for lasers before you fire.

    I love you Farbs.

beat impostor a day ago… pure luck of finding a ship with well placed shields, after having a pure translation ship with about 20 or so prismatics

  14. Michael Prescott says:

I find the key factor (beyond what you need for CS) is to be really, really choosy with your battles. Score clone energy from only the weakest ships. With no ability to repair, taking even incidental damage during an otherwise clean kill can permanently ruin your ship (leaving you weaponless, or only able to turn left). There’s nothing more frustrating than spending two minutes trying to spin yourself eastwards to catch that Foxtrot-class command module that’s slowly drifting away from you..

  15. Nick says:

@mackat had some similar luck and *almost* beat it… my heart rate doubled when I realised I had a chance!

  16. Michael Prescott says:

Okay, beat it twice now. Blix is imposing, but cloning him seems the wrong way to go; he’s too hard to get behind. Much better to get a crapload of Juliet guns, and shoot at him as he does his fly-bys. Oddly, he’s not that dangerous as long as you don’t get in his path.

  17. ryan says:

    Spoilers?

the first time i got to the end i hardly caught what was going on. I saw a blerb at the bottom saying something like “i am captain blix” then the odd colored ship and then it was all over. my second full play through worked out a bit better. things definitely happen faster once you get higher up and you just start annihilating everything around you and i think that’s why i missed blix the first time, i did notice he has some suicide style guns on his ship. I do have some questions about the end game, why is his ship also the Narcissus, are you a clone of blix’s ship hence the corrupt system? why does your pilot image change after taking him out? idk if im missing something that explains this while im fighting him
