COM: munication

Farbs

Wow my throat hurts. I can’t tell if it’s from the solid 72 hours’ talking, or from the hotbed of disease we call a conference. Either way, ow. I gave my first ever hour-long talk, which you can experience in summary through the magic of Twitter. Speaking of Twitter, guess what I’m adding to Captain Forever and Captain Successor? The new Twitter and Facebook exporters, along with the current ones, will be available after you finish a game. All ship configurations will be recorded as you play, so you’ll get to browse through them and recover your favourite pre-accident creations. Cool, no? I’ll release this with some tagalong bugfixes, then put my head down and get working on the next CF episode.

Post-GCAP Greetz go to Paul Callaghan (who got me thinking about narrative design), 2K Australia (who bought me beers and dinner), Ant Orman (who works at 2K but gets a special mention for helping with a slippery design problem), Tom Crago (who I somehow never bumped into), and Yahtzee (who politely endured my fanboyish yammering).

The record as you play is an awesome idea Farbs! Any chance one of those tagalong bugfixes has something to do with the too-many-modules crash?

  2. Farbs says:

One of the fixes will try to address that, yeah. Sadly the version of box2d I’m using can’t scale to any number of modules, but I’m hoping to raise the limit above common use – and by “common use” I mean the wild abuse commonly undertaken by James and Alexander :P

man, I love the flash client, but I’d still love the hell out of a standalone client

  4. Andrew says:

So you finally met yhatzee eh? What did he have to say about CF (if he played it)

  5. James says:

    Farbs

I’ll keep my blurst shields crossed.

  6. Andrew says:

@James: DON’T CROSS THE BEAMS YOU FOOL

  7. You gave an interesting talk, and as I said on the day, I’m glad a bunch of things you mentioned crossed over with what I said in my talk as well. You’re just further along business wise than I am, so were able to take things further.

The export as you go thing sounds like it should be a very nice feature. Are you going to allow re-exports after playing a clone, or do you still consider that too game breaking? Otherwise, is there any way that you can build in the user information into the export, so that if I play my own export, I can indeed save my game again, but others can’t because it’s a clone?

That totally doesn’t fit with your narrative structure at all, but I was just curious from a gameplay perspective. I still think your game is amazing and people should buy it, but yeah… I’m just trying to get more than the 15 hours (Forever) and 20 hours (Successor) that I was able to get thus far. :P

  8. Andrew says:

@Alexander: I completely agree on the exporting of clones. I’ve played some really cool ships that other people have made and I’ve made some really cool mods to them as well, but I was unable to save them because export is disabled in emulation mode or whatever the hell it was.

  9. Ribbonwing says:

For whatever reason, when i play captain forever, it’s updated, but captain successor is not.

  10. Farbs says:

Yeah, I’m still merging the changes across from CF to CS. I should get time to finish this up tomorrow.

  11. Thomas says:

You met Yahtzee?! I too would sound like a fanboy if I ever met him. Was he as foul mouthed and grumpy in person or was he cool? Lucky…

  12. Robert says:

Have to say, I really love the ability to view the timeline of your ship. It’s neat to look at your ship’s humble beginnings, and all the steps it took along the way until its ultimate demise.

Excellent stuff – keep up the great work!

  13. Not not Steve says:

The magic of twitter is lame. Link is bust. Or Farbs is a lie? Something…

  14. Farbs says:

Twitter doesn’t seem to search through older archives at the moment. Not sure why. Darnit.

  15. Robert says:

The ability to export ships as links lets you do some cool tricks, like attaching command modules to command modules. :)

@nckomodo: That is quite awesome. :)

  18. ryan says:

would it be possible to get a page with a change log. it would be nice to know whats changing each mini update.

  19. Andrew says:

Twitter link is broken in the blog post.

  20. TH says:

    Håla!

Got an ETA on the new update? :)

  21. Farbs says:

The export system update is out in both CF and CS. Next episode is smallish and should be ready in a few weeks.

  22. Bennett says:

Hey farbs, it seems to me you should be on twitter if your games are going to export to twitter.

  23. Andrew says:

    Hey, we need an update!

  24. Sam says:

Farbs is there a way for me to email you? that you will actually read? preferably non public.

  25. Dave says:
