COM: munity

A week (or so) after launch, Captain Forever is looking pretty good. Tens of thousands of people have played it, and over a hundred were awesome enough to register. Thanks everyone! What’s even cooler is that people are starting their own CF initiatives. In the past week I’ve seen a 3,500 word strategy guide, a facebook group, a wiki, and even a wikipedia entry (though this is being threatened with deletion). Huge props go to the people behind these projects. If you have both the time and the inclination, please drop by the wiki and jot something down.

The games themselves have also seen a minor overhaul, with annoying scrap reclaimation warnings appearing much less often and adaptive training messages added to CF to assist first-time players. This week I’m making some final changes to CF and CS, and starting work on a new addition to the series. Expect more soon!

sweet. any possibility of being able to tune to a radio station in game and listen to that sweet captain forever track?

also im not sure if these are bugs or not in cs but if i shoot at a blurst shield it can bounce back and penetrate my own bubble shield. also the frequency for the lasers is listed in Hz while it seems everything else is in mHz. not a big deal but my engineer mind fizzles at inconsistent units.

also for a suggestion can we get missiles and torpedoes to launch at a speed relative to the ship rather than the world. stinks when your cruising along and you shoot only to have them smash into you. and maybe a different end game, i find myself not really enjoying the end because of the doppelgangers. you either make a super gimped ship or you face a gun at your self. not all that much fun.

still a ton of fun overall. thanks for the hard work.

Teehee, the Wiki and Wikipedia entry were both me :)

I am currently working to save the Wikipedia entry, some jerk “Airplaneman” is fighting to have it deleted! I have already had 3 other Wikipedians agree with me that it deserves notability, and it looks like it may be wrapping up soon. Keep working on this awesome series, and you will continue to get this kind of passion and publicity!

@ryan – The physics engine I use isn’t great at one-way walls, so I had to make the bubble shield not collide with your own lasers to allow you to shoot through them. Unfortunately, as you discovered, this means they can bounce back in :)

The specification for armament frequency labelling standards changed between production of the original Laser and some of its more advanced derivatives.

I tried to get streaming radio into the game but t’was to no avail. You can download the track (linked in an earlier post) and play it in a background application though.

Missiles and torpedoes do both inherit ship velocity, however:
    i) Translocators and Transrotators (both rare modules) move the ship _without_ affecting momentum
ii) Missiles slow down after launch to re-orient themselves at their targets

The thing to remember is to accelerate _before_ firing these weapons, not immediately afterwards

    @Nic – Cheers :D

Seems we have an instant classic on our hands. Im a long time member of the newgrounds.com community. Many games and flash cartoons have been submitted there and enjoyed by the community. If you want to reach out to a far greater audience, I recommend submitting Captain Forever to the Newgrounds flash portal now that its freeware. Its free and is a fantastic way to get thousands of more people to see your work. Other sites to consider would be armorgames.com and bubblebox.com. Your game is an easy contender to win the best flash of the week as well as the other awards.

As much I love this game and miss the hours it has taken from me, there are a few ideas I had. One of them is a wave or sandbox mode. In the interface you can click “SIMULATION.BAT” where you can select the level of module, then select how many of what level of enemy you want to engage after you build your custom ship.

    Good luck with games!

Cheers Thomas. I’ll probably start sending CF to Newgrounds and other flash portals in a few weeks, but I figured I should keep it at http://www.captainforever.com for a while first to build up google page ranking etc.

Sandbox mode is a good idea. I have some other stuff to do first, but I’ll keep it in mind. Thanks man.

I love captain forever. I play it in almost all my free time, at least when im not playing with my dog or doing work. My two cents for the game would probably have to be some sort of VERY basic mining system to build parts or something… add a little more depth, and a purpose for the coordinate system. @Thomas The sandbox idea does sound fun.

This would by no means be simple in terms of engineering, but it would be lovely to have a mode where players construct and save mid-sized ships with a resource cap (with each module having a different cost). These ships could then compete in an arena or race track. I think it would be a fun engineering challenge, and circumvent the “more parts = better ship” philosophy that a lot of people seem to employ in the single player game :) .

There could be different classes for different resource caps- tiny fighters, big hulking battleships… But I’ll love the game if it stays single player only, mind you. You’ve got a great design sense and as long as that stays true I’ll back you 100% no matter what you do next.

I’ve passed this around to a few forums..

most people I’ve linked it to have become addicts.

    I even paid for entry..

I love this game soooo much.
I can stay behind you just because of Captain Forever.
Successor is alright but it takes a bit more time – I was hoping to see some additional features added to capt forever..

    Humma..

Good stuff… Though I must say that this (link) is a special endgame (at least my first encounter of this). Every ship I encounter is a copy of my own vessel, which is built up of only “bumpers” and no guns.. I.e. everybody is just flying around and playing “bumper cars”.

is the structure of the reconstruction data a super secret or would you be open to telling how it works, so far all i’ve figured out is each pieces is represented by 5 characters and it seems you did something strange to pack it all in

    I love this game.
After playing around with free version for a while I decided to chip in my $20 to support your future games, I can’t wait to see what improvements you come up with and really like the idea of keeping the separate incarnations alive instead of simply upgrading the same game.

Something I enjoy about the game and would like to see expanded on in a future branch would be the roguelike aspects of the game. To me that means as much randomized and procedural content as possible :-)

Keep up the great work, thanks!

I need to play against people and voice chat!!!

  15. Yeah. Would be a great MMO tbqh. Probably way more work, but that’d be great. Still start out as a small ship, and then have some behemoth come in and blow you to pieces. LOL…

(Oh I would be such a jerk in said game…)

  16. Joe says:

Wonderful game, I think it could use repair kits for your command module. This game would probably do well on kongregate.com, you should post it. I would be willing to post it for you, giving all the credit to you of course.

Well, TinyURL works, so here it is… This one is KILLER!

Forgot to say, the only thing that can kill it… is itself!

But only if there’s as many mirrors of yourself on the screen as can be had at once!

  19. Roger says:

So, um, my exported ship has an infobuoy – I think it got messed up when it got word wrapped in notepad or something.

    Dunno what’s up with it.
