Has Captain Forever launched?
Yes!
Can I play Captain Forever for free?
Yes!
Can I play Captain Successor?
Yes! But only if you are a supporter.
Is that all?
No! On Monday I’ll start the next game in the series. It will be like Captain Forever and Captain Successor, but better. When it’s finished it’ll be released to all Captain Forever supporters. Then, with any luck, I’ll start building another Captain Forever game for you.
Thanks Farbs! I love you. Is there anything else I can do to help?
Yes! You can tell everyone you know to play Captain Forever. They don’t have to support it, and hell they don’t even have to like it. It’d just be rad if they gave it a try. Thanks!
<3 Farbs
FINALLY YAY THX *other hail you comments that i have no time to type as i have to go play it*
yay thanks farbs, theres so much more stuff in this one, very impressed
Holy shit. This is awesome.
So much more… STUFF.
Really impressive
But i hate those little single-module-dual-mega-booster-ram thingys… they just fly all over… haven’t killed a single one of those yet :S
also how do the crono mudule work?
<3
I have played several hours, and on the whole it is an excellent sequel, though I must say, the “I’m going to duplicate your ship” on the last level leads to many situations where you can’t win. E.g. you lose all your guns and fly off… and then get stuck fighting impostors who also have no guns, and move really fast… and you only have your puny little gun that can’t do anything against enemies with like 800,000 health. So, you just have to restart.
Basically, every time I’ve reached the last level I’ve either been completely overwhelmed (30% of the time), have had them kill each other randomly (10% of the time) or have had to restart (60% of the time). So, pretty much 0% of it has been strategic once reaching the end.
I’m also curious as to what the Chrono module does. I’ve worked out everything else except that one, so I just don’t use it.
Thanks everyone
The ships are quite the puzzle, and to be honest I still don’t have a strong strategy for defeating them. Flying around with an important module held with the mouse can certainly help though.
The Chrono Gear compresses time, so modules attached to it (via the tree structure) operate faster. This can affect rate of fire, thruster alignment rates, shield recharge rates… all sorts of things. The effect is relatively minor, but if you happen upon _several_ Chrono Gears things can get rather interesting.
Well, when I HAVE beaten them, it has hardly been strategic. It has been along the lines of “fly around with absolutely nothing except for a strong gun held in hand, wait for them to appear with no weapons, and then blast them.
Alternatively, carry around a massive cube and just stuff it on top of them so that they can’t move because it’s in the way.
So far it has boiled down to make the most useless ship you can, kill the last white dude, and then when they appear, rebuild a proper ship.
Hm. I’m not sure how much sense this will make, but all of these pieces are flashing colours… I am firing a constant stream of ownage…

That didn’t work at all. Just click the link
I actually killed those last ones pretty easily… one strategy I use if my big ship get destroyed during the later part of the game is just taking my remaining main module and finding 3 translocators and 1 gun, so I have great speed and I can manage to kill the big ships by flying around their lasers and killing them Death Star-style. When a lot of those 3_translocators+1_gun attacked me at the end, they didn’t know how to use them well, so I just blasted them while they were trying to turn around. But I admit, if I still had a huge ship, I would have been blown to smitherings.
Yeah they’re not that bad now. Basically just stick with one gun on your ship, but don’t have it attached, and then they can’t do anything. Also… Chrono modules are the win. I had 11 chained in a row and had a constant stream of awesome until I accidentally lost my shields and got obliterated.
I just tried your ship… When your clones arrived I was almost blinded by all the white streams blazing everywhere and died. Fantastic!
Take the gun off before they appear ^_^
You’ll instantly go from like 5 to… 20 if you kill the first batch! They can’t move or shoot back. They’re useless. Hahaha.
<3
Sweet, thanks farbs! My friend who has been wanted to play capatain forever will be super-happy about this. I’ll be sure to try this out when I get home. Nice work!
Farbs I love you. Will you marry me?
Anyway, the first time I played, I got two of the big green lasers, and I felt like I was turning in my Glock for a Peacemaker
OH YES! BOO-YAH! Mwahaha!

Owned? ^_^
I had to stop playing because it crashed as I had too many pieces
***SPOILER***
There’s no need to actually pilot the ship, as you can’t die, you’ll kill yourself if you hit spacebar, and it will crash as soon as you try. So here’s a picture instead:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v151/Demruth/CaptainSuccessorInvincible.jpg
So yeah. The best strategy I have for the final level guys is point a gun at yourself. Have whatever style ship you want, but just let them kill themselves. LOL!
And yeah, you just exponentially grow from there. They’ll kill themselves, you take all their pieces, rinse and repeat until the game crashes
OH MY GOD
***SPOILER***
I am the winrar? Impostors aren’t so smart after all! Every time I get to the white level, I kill a white ship and then quickly face a gun at myself. I win every time.
I’m… not sure if you want to fix that, because it makes the last level QUITE EASY now! hahaha
Fix it? No way – It’s great! It just means the last level is more like a puzzle now. A puzzle that you have solved.
I might go add SPOILER tags to your earlier posts though.
You can remove my posts entirely if you don’t want people to know about it. I don’t mind. The main thing is, I won, and you saw it.
Too late – I already posted your ship picture on facebook
(Please don’t replace it with a goatse)
Haha. Don’t worry, I won’t replace it with Goatse.
Leave it on your facebook, but you may still want to remove it from here though. Given that people who play the game are likely to be reading this blog. I don’t want to spoil the experience for anyone. I’ve kinda spoiled it for myself now!
But, back to making the most awesome Chrono Gear ship again. This game is indeed fun. I should get more people to buy it so they can experience it.
It’s okay, not many people visit the blog. I think ~8,000 people have played Captain Forever since launch, and only 100 more people than usual visited here.
Any chance you could make the Chrono Gear less rare? I’ve been trying to build a good ship out of them for hours, and most of that has just been flying around waiting for a ship with one to spawn.
Well, it was a long time coming, but I present to you all possibly the most win ship ever (once I get some shields, as they’ll never die due to massive regeneration speed).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v151/Demruth/CaptainSuccessorRidiculous.jpg
Where do i get a shield? I always do bad at killing enemies.
They’re pretty hard to find, yeah.
***SPOILERS***
Last one that I had to make before calling it quits with these behemoths (this one kept crashing me a lot while trying to make it).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v151/Demruth/CaptainSuccessorUnstoppable.jpg
Best ship yet. It’s so good that impostors stop getting collision because they have too many parts, and I can no longer grow any bigger.
If the game didn’t crash when I added more pieces, all of the Chrono Gears are there so that I can attach force fields to the entire center of the ship… ideally. They’d never die because as soon as you connect them to the Chrono Gears, they’re fully charged. And then I’d surround the entire sides / back of the ship with guns (growing from the inside out, from the last Chrono Gear on either side, for maximum fire speed… possibly growing them out with MORE CHRONO GEARS!). But, alas, I can’t do that, because it crashes.
But, you really don’t need to anyway. As it is right now, the ship flies so fast that you can just steer head on into absolutely everything and you will never stop. You’ll collide with enemies, they’ll get stuck within your ship (the double layer of spikes are necessary for exactly this reason), they’ll bounce off your ship trying to get out of the collision, allowing you to ram into them again. Nothing stands a chance, and this beats any other ship that I’ve made due to its ridiculous maneuverability. You no longer even need to aim because it’s so big. You just fly straight forward and turn occasionally and you win. It turns really really fast as well, and can go in reverse just as well as it goes forwards.
Great game Farbs, but I think I’ve just about hit the limit of what can be done with it. Unfortunately, I can’t beat the crash monsters. They get me every time.
Why take only pics of a behemoth when you can SHARE THEM?!
Link pls.
God damn I love this game. I’ve got Assassin’s Creed II and Modern Warfare 2, but the game I think about the most when I’m not playing is Captain Forever/Successor.
I’ve been pimping the game on my podcast, RebelFM for the past three weeks. Will continue. LOVE IT!!!
***SPOILERS***
Sharing the links kind of destroys the fun of building them yourself though. I learned that with Captain Forever. Like, trying to build these ships was half the fun. Once you’ve got them it’s pretty much hold down keys and you own everything.
Use at own risk.

I love how you’ve managed to make the whole thing make sense. You, sir, are a talented tale-weaver. I think I enjoy the premise even more than I do the actual game.
Request for a behemoth:
A lot of those “Turn is almost any direction”-thrusters (forgot their name), with a good long range weapon.
You get absolutely nothing for doing this. XD
Good stuff. Am sharing it around…hanging off myself ’til I’ve time to get the hang of it properly. Congrats.
Noxn you wouldn’t want a lot of those turn in any direction thrusters. The giant thrusters that I’ve got put on the right shaped ship will be far more maneuverable than a whole lot of those little ones. Those ones that can turn directions aren’t anywhere near as strong as normal 1 direction thrusters.
Captain successor is much improved in many ways. Love the shields and repair units! I’d love to see neutonian phyics (as an option maybe?)that make the game play more like a game of asteroids.
Juliet level I’m not liking too much. The game crashes all the time which means that I’ve just spent hours building up a ship for nothing. The game really needs a save feature. To keep that hardcore feeling, just add code to delete the save if you die.
I don’t care for the ship duplication at juliet level either. The game stops being tactical at this level. Either the enemy is indestructible, or you use one of the cheap tricks already discussed to make the enemy kill themselves. Either way, the game is over once you reach juliet.
I’d also like a base that you can go to to reconfigure your ship.
I don’t know that it needs a save feature as much as it just needs the crashes fixed, though being able to save multiple times would certainly still be nice.
I’d also like to start fighting some behemoths like the ones I was building once you get to the end level, rather than impostors, because TBH, even if you have a massive ship, taking down ones the size of the ones I was making is still really hard, and at the end of the day it’s not like you instantly get a massive ship as a result of it, because you end up having to destroy so much of them trying to get to the core (or getting destroyed in the process of trying to be clever) that it just keeps things progressively difficult once the pieces stop getting upgraded.
It does have a save feature (just press X, I think) but it can only be used once, which is annoying if your parents break your and your brother’s computer time into 30-minute segments.
Vince, I know about the export feature. I’m talking about a real save system.
Thanks anyway though.
By the way, What is captain Successor?
Captain Successor is the second game in Farb’s series.
I just have to say, as a programmer, I can imagine the work that went into this game. I gladly put my $20 to support this game.
@Farbs: You might want to consider putting some more information about what was added in Captain Successor, just to entice people to pay for it. It wasn’t clear exactly how much was added just from the main site, and as compelling as Captain Forever was, what really convinced me to pay is people mentioning elsewhere how much stuff was added. It’s a LOT! Not that you have to detail every little thing, but I think sales would go way up if you just give some pics of some of ships from Captain Successor, showing all this new stuff that they will want to find out what it is.
***SPOILERS***
The only thing I would change (besides adding more stuff!) is 2 things:
1. Some of the starting weapons are a little crippled, it’s very difficult to get anywhere with just ramming spikes, or even the seeking rockets.
2. I’m not sure how much optimization has been done so far, since I have a quad core monster, but things can get really crazy and I’ll get errors in my debug player if I build ships too big. So for slower machines any optimization that can be done would be appreciated I’m sure. Seems like you know AS3 pretty well though, so you’ve probably already done most of this. Oh I just remembered, I think the error was in the Box2D code, mentioning proxies. I don’t know if you know this, but there’s actually a limit to the number of proxies, which is in the settings. Might want to bump this up a little, or when you get too many bodies that will always happen. Either that or limit how big people can build ships

Posted a link to captain forever on reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/abt8b/captain_forever_build_a_ship_on_the_fly_fight/). Excellent game. There is feedback int he comments there for instance: for people who don’t use qwerty keyboard wasd is not the best choice, making it configurable or maybe adding arrow controls would help.
In anycase well worth the game.
A triumph! iPhone, XBLA, ASAP! You’re gonna make $$!
