Forever in 10m

80 : 10

Captain Forever supporter John Tokash compiled this great playthrough, and put my video compression skillz to shame. It’s very interesting seeing the scoop technique in action – I’d heard about it but I’d never actually seen it done before. Thanks John!

Scoop technique looks like fun! Must try it… currently using “David vs Goliath” technique – flying around with just one laser and one thruster, getting as close to enemy as possible and destroying him from inside.

  2. Marcin says:

Man, I totally invented the scoop technique :P This one’s mine: http://vcd.phuce.com/vessels/29

But I think I had the most fun with an L shaped ship that I pincered on to another, much-stronger ship, which I then used as an aimable weapon. He had a G class laser and all I had was a ton of engines – so I used his weapon (by rotating him the direction I wanted) to blow up enough foes to remake my own ship. Good times.

  3. Vince says:

Oh schnap-whiffle! That yellow fool engsmoldered half your ship!
    That was fun.
And to DennyTom: When I’m failing, I use that exact same technique!

  4. sigs says:

    play-through?

Also, check out tumiki fighters by kenta cho. This is kind of remake, just with less chaos and more control. Which is not only bad, tumiki fighters IS quite a mess…

I wish all best to your project!

    Suggestion: genome to opponents so that they could “learn” over time. There could be both strategy genome (genes = behavioural instructions = code that outputs movement commands) and ship genome (genes = blocks and connection rules = instructions that output a ship model). Then you could leave your computer alone for a while so that the game would do genetic evolution at its own (;

  5. dvgrn says:

Yup, the David-and-Goliath strategy seems to work more reliably than anything else, all the way up to Juliet / Kilo level … with the caveat that at the higher levels it’s really Goliath vs. Goliath — you just keep finding a couple of the biggest baddest ships at the current level and fly circles around them, staying just out of range, and pretty soon one of them accidentally destroys the other (and then flies off in terror when the “criminal activity” warning appears, leaving you to pick over the debris.)

It’s such an easy strategy that it seems like a flaw in the design — along with the big ships’ predictability (always turning to face you while firing indiscriminately).

What I’d like to get good at is reconfiguring my ship in the middle of a firefight — rebuild in a puzzle-piece shape, let’s say, to catch one side of a big ship, then move guns around to progressively take out the enemy ship’s most dangerous guns and then go straight for the heart, to keep as many good pieces intact as possible. But there’s no incentive to work on this when David-and-Goliath works so darn well…

It would be _really_ interesting to have to fight enemy ships that could reconfigure themselves. Are there any tasty rumors yet about what changes are coming along for Captain Successor?

  6. Farbs says:

Hey thanks dvgrn. I agree there’s not much incentive to build up at the moment (other than that it’s kinda fun). This is something I’m working on for Captain Successor. No juicy rumours at the moment, ‘cos I don’t want to lock the design down yet. I’m pretty confident I can say that there will be more stuff. Cool stuff.

More details in a couple of weeks.

  7. Vince says:

Is the sequel actually going to be called Captain Successor?? So confused…

  8. Vince says:

Farbs! I made the BEST SHIP OF ALL FREAKING TIME!

  9. Vince says:

I also just made this beautiful thing. (Seriously, try this one out.)

  10. Farbs says:

Heheh, very nice Vince. You know, you can just hit Shift-C for pretty much the same effect :P

I toyed with a few other names, but it looks like Captain Successor is going to stick. Unless someone suggests something better..?

  11. Andrew says:

    Captain Regretter (regrettor?)

  12. Andrew says:

    Are comments broken.

FARBS EDIT: Nope, but your last comment was tagged as spam for some reason. It should be visible now.

  13. Vince says:

    Kittysneezes?

  14. DennyTom says:

dvgrn: I agree with everything you have said. I believe this could be solved with few AI modifications.

    1) Registering flying in a close proximity as an act of war (first give warning, then shoot). This would make “docking” or locking in ships much harder.
    2) Fleeing after half of ship has been lost. Now you would have to finish ship by yourself and could not use goliath vs goliath technique.
    3) Using more strategies than just standning on place, turning and firing. Ships with big maximum speed could build some speed and THEN turn. Small ship then would not be able to fly around in circles and would be much easier target.

  15. Simon K says:

Hey, what a great game this is indeed!

I just affraid that I’v found a glitch when you build your ship to large.

I played around for like 2h last night, ending up with this huge baby for a death-bringer. Only problem is, that if you shoot to much at a time, the game freezes, and ends up crashing.

Will this be something that can be fixed, or is it just me mac treading be badly?

here is a link for my little ship:

  16. Simon, that ship is fantastic. I’m having fun just flying around in it now wreaking havoc on everything!

  17. But it does indeed crash, even if graphics are set to lowest. :( I’m on Windows XP, was running through firefox, so it’s not just your mac. Least you have it saved though. :P

  18. Stray Robot says:

Nice Ship Simon! how on earth did you build it on the fly! I just held down spacebar and it did not crash for me. My biggest problem with this game is that its so fun to build but you never have the time, i wish i could dock somewhere or pause and build..its pretty ridiculous that the one thing thats so fun to do is practically impossible to accomplish..to many enemies or make it so you can build in a safe haven somewhere.

Here’s a beast of a ship to try out in successor…http://www.captainforever.com/captainsuccessor.php?cfe=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

Just a tip for captain successor if you want to build ungodly vessels, use the game against itself. If you know that the kilo level ships copy your ship design, be clever and use that fact.

  20. Hardparty says:

More Captain Successor ships plz!! :)

  21. ROFLSHIP says:

make a square out of those 3 long peices, but with a hollow inside. evenly fill the inside with boosters. use bubble sheild generators for corners and connectors. cover the entire outside with the strongest guns that you can find. this is a litteraly invincible square if you use level Kilo stuff.
i made one, but it wouldnt let me share it, so sry. =(

  22. Hagarr says:

I’m terribly addicted to these games.. thanx Farbs. :o )

aka: the Unstoppable Force (lawl) – I think the only thing that can take this ship out is a crashing computer.
inspired by both Big John’s use of shields and Simon K’s 1337 structure.

Anyhow, I would love the chance to fly more user created ships, – is there a forum for this, or can we make this one? :o )

Farbs, when I build ships this large, I find the game is running 100% in my CPU instead of my GPU, do you know if there is a way that I can change where the flashplayer is doing the rendering?

  23. Farbs says:

    Hey cheers Hagarr!

You can find an archive of ships at http://vcd.phuce.com/, though I think it’s limited to Captain Forever (not Successor).

Unfortunately flash’s GPU support is still extremely poor, so yeah we’re stuck with CPU rendering.
